Busy Is A Four Letter Word

Everything I’ve read or heard about having a blog says make sure to write regularly or else it’s better not to have one. If you want people to pay attention to your blog you have to provide something for them to pay attention to on a regular basis.

OK. That makes sense. I get it. And I notice that my last entry was 5 months ago. And the previous one, 3 months prior. Oops. That isn’t very regular.

I could say I’ve been ‘busy’. That’s a very popular word these days. As everything speeds up, we are ‘busier’ and ‘busier’. In the ‘old days’ when we asked someone “how are you?” the answer was “fine”. We were never quite sure what “fine” meant however we would likely answer with the same response. Now, the ubiquitous answer is “busy”.

Everyone is busy. Busy, busy, busy. The word starts to sound like a constant buzzing, droning on without a sense of direction or stop or start. No sense of the present moment.

Busy has become the excuse when we don’t choose something as a priority or we’re not willing to say the truth about what we want or don’t want, or what we did or didn’t do and so on. In my opinion, busy is a 4 letter word. It’s a cop out from taking responsibility for our lives. Everything we do is a choice. Very often we are unaware that in fact we are making a choice. We operate on auto-pilot, out of habit or feeling a lack of control. We lose perspective on what’s happening in the moment. We forget to ask ourselves, “what do I want?” – now, in 5 minutes, 5 days or 5 years? Then, what choices will bring me closer to having what I want?

When we slow down and pay attention to each moment, we are able to make conscious and intentional choices. We stop the buzzing and start to feel the ebb and flow, beginning and ending of events and activities in our lives. Our days feel fulfilled rather than frenzied. Now when someone says, “How are you”, the reply can be “my day/week/life has been full”. It has a sense of being satiated not empty or endless.

Back to my blog irregularities. My life has been very full these last months. Lots of change that includes ups and downs, endings and beginnings. AND my blog never made it to the top of the priority list during this time. Choices. Choices. It’s as simple as that.
